Fruit flies pose a significant economic threat to the Australian horticultural industry. There are two main species of fruit fly in Australia - the Queensland Fruit Fly is found in Queensland, Northern Territory, New South Wales and Victoria and the Mediterranean Fruit Fly which only occurs in Western Australia. Both species have the potential to cause hundreds of millions of dollars in fruit crop damage and eradication costs.The adult female fruit fly lay eggs in the flesh of ripening and ripe fruits and vegetables. Once the eggs hatch, the larvae begin to feed within the fruit, causing it to rot and drop to the ground.
