Termite traps or termite monitoring stations are specially designed devices to lure termites. Depending on the brand, these traps are placed either directly on top of the ground surface or dug into the soil to a depth of approximately 30cm. The traps are placed approximately every 3 metres around the perimeter of the house, building or other structure. Once installed, these termite traps need to be monitored regularly for termite activity as they are designed to 'intercept' termites before they enter the building or structure. If or when termite activity is discovered in any of the traps, termite bait can then be applied. This bait contains in insect growth regulator (IGR) which the termites feed on and take back to the colony. The bait should be checked regularly and replenished when necessary until all activity has ceased. After a period of time feeding on the bait, the termite colony will be eliminated and the traps can be re-set. The termite bait can also be used on its own if you have discovered termites somewhere else around the building or property such as skirting boards, door frames, floor joists, fence posts, tree stumps, etc.
