CONTROL

Possums are mostly non-aggressive animals. There are several ways to get rid of them and most simply involve making the environment less appealing.

Cover Openings
Cover all vents or open accesses to your home. Ensure attic vents and chimneys are covered with a grid screen. Repair or cover holes in decks, window screens and or door screens. Ensure you cover or lock pet door at night.

Motion Activated Ultrasonic Devices
Place the motion activated device near the problem area where possums most frequent. Motion activated devices are triggred once the possum crosses the sensor, the device will then active and turn on which in turn may frighten many possums away.

Smells and Food
Spread something that smells potent. Possums tent to flee from smells such as Ammonia, mothballs and garlic. Apply a chemical repellent. These can be applied to gardens, flowerbeds, or the base of a structure.

Remove Food Sources
Possums are attracted to yards and homes where food is easy to obtain. By removing the food sources you will make your property dramatically less appealing. Never intentionally provide food for possums. Possums fed by humans will gradually lose their fear of humans and may become aggressive if food is not given.

Keep possums from garbage bins by making sure the lids are shut tight. Feed pets indoors if possible or clean up food and water from outside once pets have been fed. Keep BBQ’s clean including grease traps.

If you have fruit trees, pick up fruit that has dropped or try to avoid the fruit dropping using netting.

Avoid scattering bird seed in late afternoon. Try to do it late morning or mid afternoon and only or use bird feeders and move them inside of an evening.

Outdoor coverings and hiding places
Mow tall grass especially around houses and buildings. Remove piles of wood, clippings and branches. Also items like overturned planter or barrels are appealing to hide.

Trapping
Using a humane live trap to capture possums without hurting or killing them. Set up trap in an area where the possum frequents. Make sure you use appropriate bait such as fruit, berries, vegetables, peanut butter which will attract the possum into the cage.
Make sure you monitor the trap. Once you have captured the possum, move trap to a quite spot and cover until you are ready to realease it.

Make sure you use thick gloves or a long pole to prevent yourself from getting scratched. When releasing the possum point the cage in the direction you want the animal to run off into.

Or hire a professional to release the possum for you.
